HUD FY 2022 HMIS Data Standard Changes

On October 1, 2021, the Federal Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 HUD HMIS Data Standards that are required of projects participating in HMIS go into effect.

HMIS Data Standards that go into effect on 10/01/2021 are outlined below.  Please note the significant change to the Gender 3.06 Data Element.  This is presented in HMIS as a multi-select box.  Persons are able to identify as many applicable genders and multiple genders may be selected by holding the ‘CTRL’ button and clicking each applicable choice.

HUD UNIVERSAL DATA ELEMENTS – SUMMARY OF CHANGES

  • Revised language: 3.04 Race

    • ‘American Indian or Alaska Native’ is now ‘American Indian, Alaska Native, or Indigenous’

    • ‘Asian’ is now ‘Asian or Asian American’

    • ‘Black or African American’ is now ‘Black, African American, or African’

    • ‘Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander’ is now ‘Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander’

  • Revised language: 3.05 Ethnicity

    • ‘Hispanic/Latino’ is now ‘Hispanic/Latin(a)(o)(x)’

    • ‘Non-Hispanic/Non-Latino’ is now ‘Non-Hispanic/Non-Latin(a)(o)(x)’

  • Revised language and element structure: 3.06 Gender

    • ‘Gender Non-Conforming’ is now ‘A gender that is not singularly ‘Female’ or ‘Male’ (e.g., non-binary, genderfluid, agender, culturally specific gender)’

    • ‘Transgender’ – new response option

    • ‘Questioning’ – new response option

    • ‘Trans Female (MTF or Male to Female)’ has been removed

    • ‘Trans Male (FTM or Female to Male)’ has been removed

    • Data collection guidance has been revised so that clients may select as many responses to the Gender field as they would like to, with up to a total of five options possible for a client’s preferred identity, need or situation.

COMMON PROGRAM SPECIFIC DATA ELEMENTS – SUMMARY OF CHANGES

  • Added logic for how to treat a person aging into adulthood for 4.02 Income and Sources and 4.03 Non-Cash Benefits

  • Added three new Referral Event response options: 4.20 Coordinated Entry Event

  • Revised language to element name and responses: 4.09 Mental Health

  • Revised language to element name and responses: 4.10 Substance Use

  • New element: C1 Well-being

  • New element: C2 Moving On

  • New element: C3 Youth Education Status

  • New data element requirement: R7 General Health Status

  • Revised language to response options: R13 Family Critical Issues

HOPWA PROGRAM SPECIFIC DATA ELEMENTS – SUMMARY OF CHANGES

  • New field response: W3 Medical Assistance

  • New element: W6 Prescribed Anti-Retroviral
